MENTORING PROGRAM

HOW TO ARRANGE MENTORING

Interpreters living in New Jersey are welcome to inquire about mentoring.
Interested interpreters can email me and inquire about mentoring.  Usually we would work an assignment together and take time to discuss any issues you have relating to your interpretation. There is also the possibility of getting together on a regular basis and discussing issues you have noticed in your other work.
A plan will be developed to work on any areas that need improvement with follow up meetings to discuss how the plan is progressing.

Long distant remote mentoring is also possible.
Interpreters interested in remote mentoring would need to be able to have video samples of their work that can be uploaded to YouTube.  I would view the video and then we would choose a time that works for both of us to video chat.  This type of mentoring can be an ongoing regular mentoring, a short term mentoring, or an on occasion mentoring to deal with a specific issue.

HOW DIAGNOSTIC FEEDBACK WORKS

Diagnostic feedback is a process where interpreters can have their work examined by another interpreter for the purposes of helping identify strengths and weaknesses. The ultimate goal of formal diagnostics is to improving the interpreter’s skills.

An interpreter wishing to have their work evaluated should produce a video of himself or herself interpreting. The video should include both interpreting into ASL and into English. The video can be of a live event or can be an interpretation done at  his / her home to texts the interpreter finds to be good texts to challenge his or her skills.  Some interpreters chose on line free source texts like; ted talks, Deaf Vlogs, etc.

The video can be burned onto a DVD and mail it to me, or it can be posted to a YouTube account and the URL to the video is emailed to me.  A written report will be sent back to the interpreter, usually via email no later than three weeks after it has been received.  The report will be emailed in encrypted format and once the fee is paid the encryption password will be sent.

Further discussion about the diagnostics can be done via email, phone, or Skype / FaceTime.
